Promoting Health, Fitness, Transportation, and Safety: The New Bedford Bicycle Committee

By Paul Rowe

Stunning bike paths wind along the south end peninsula of New Bedford, Massachusetts. These paths curve around the coast of Fort Tabor to the southernmost part of the city, providing breathtaking views of Cuttyhunk Island and Buzzards Bay. Ever since the opening of the immense Hurricane Walk Path, cyclists have been gifted access to some breathtaking views of the ocean.

Thanks to the New Bedford Bicycle Committee, more cyclists take part in these inspiring rides than ever before. The Committee hosts monthly-organized bicycle rides where novice riders receive helpful tips and have all of their bicycle-related questions answered. Committee members attend government planning meetings to ensure that bicycle lanes are included in any of the city's construction plans.

"Since the Committee was formed, many miles of bike lanes have been added and over 100 bike racks have been installed throughout the city of New Bedford," says Laurence Langlois. "There have been two bicycle repair stations installed since then."

The New Bedford community has eagerly supported the work of the Committee. In fact, the Committee has even received micro grants from the United Way. Support has grown over the years as citizens reward the organization for its dedicated volunteer work and inspiring level of community involvement.

"The Bicycle Committee is also involved with the Buzzards Bay Coalition," says Langlois. "Our members have volunteered to support the riders of the annual Buzzards Bay Ride, an event drawing tremendous support from the community."

For many years, The New Bedford Bicycle Committee has advocated and increased awareness for bicyclists in the city of New Bedford who use their bikes for transportation and recreational activities. The Committee has strived to connect all of New Bedford by bike, allowing for a safe and enjoyable form of transportation.

Many folks from New Bedford crave alternative forms of transportation, be it biking, running, rollerblading, or simply walking. There are many reasons for this - including good health and a clean environment. The New Bedford Bicycle Committee has created a safety-first community environment, all the way down to providing stickers and water bottles with safety tips on the back.

Whether you're into BMX, mountain bikes, road bikes, trail bikes, or freestyle riding, you can keep an eye out for relaxing, healthy rides all year round by signing up for The New Bedford Bicycle Committee Mailing List. Join the movement.
